On Wednesday 23rd of September we had our inaugural Open Day at the Lakeside Cafe in Clydach Vale. We started setting up at 8am, and as one by one our volunteers and displays arrived we were ready to go at 10am. The scouts group had worked hard to get the marquee up which provided shelter for some of our exhibitors. Just as well as the rain started falling after a sunny dry start to the day.
There were lots of things to see and do on the day.
The birds of prey proved popular with some of our many visitors on the day. Jason, of Falconry UK was very knowledgeable about the birds they had on display
Cambrian woodcarvers displayed some of the amazing work they carry out, and everyone was fascinated by the chainsaw carving carried out by Steve Frederick of the woodcarvers.
Martyn Broughton had set up a fitness circuit using the path around the lake which a number of people tried out. He normally carries out a fitness session every Friday morning between 11 and 12 at the running track in Clydach Vale. He has spoken to Communities First about the possibility of using the circuit he has set up around the bottom lake. We will keep you informed of any movement on this.
Miskin canoe club attended to demonstrate the use of the bottom lake for canoeing. The Rhondda paddlers use the lake as their base. Should anyone be interested in taking up canoeing, let us know and we will get contact information for you.
Richard Barrett of Keep Wales Tidy was present to try and drive home the need to keep our environment in a clean and tidy manner.
R.C.T had one of their Street Enforcement officers in attendance to demonstrate what the council is trying to do to help our environment. They also had a team carrying out free dog chipping. They carried out some chipping, as well as checking dogs who had been chipped to ensure the chips were active. It was quite pleasing to see how many dog owners who attended the lake had already had their dogs chipped.
Our Communities First Team were also present showing the various activities available through them. They also made some soups for the public to try, that demonstrated how easy it was to make the soups, encouraging healthy eating. Having tried the chilli soup myself, I can assure you it tasted fabulous. They also provided recipes.
There was demonstration of willow weaving by Mel and Nancy. Some people had a try and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Our local library were also there to show what they have to offer the area.
Cwmclydach Primary School had their Eco Committee in the Lakeside conservatory showing some of the activities they carry out to aid our environment. At 1.30pm, the school choir came along and sang some songs which were enjoyed by one and all

We had a visitor log we we asked as many people as we could to fill in. Some of the comments included, "good for the lake and community".
"lovely place", "Very interesting". "excellent day. Helped raise awareness on what is going on". All in all very positive feedback.
The main purpose of the day was to inform people who we are, and what we do in our stunning countryside park. We have also gained a couple of volunteers as a result, which was another one of our aims. The country park is there for the use of our community, and we hope over a period of time to keep on making improvements to the park so that more and more people will get to enjoy it
